Can you HamCram your upgrade?

People ask if it is possible to use the HamCram technique to upgrade their amateur radio license. The answer is:

Yes -- Many people have used the HamCram technique to upgrade from Technician to General Class. The question pool is approximately the same size (you can find it here) and the test is 35 questions, just like Technician.

Like the Technician HamCram, we recommend that would-be Generals don't study or even read General-level material before the test. We find this encourages HamCram students to try to "think" the answers to the test, causing them to fail.

No -- The Extra Class test is generally not worthwhile to try using the HamCram technique. The Extra question pool is much larger than the Technician and General question pools and the test has more questions. We do not recommend using a HamCram as the path of an Extra Class upgrade.

Having said that, more than one person have gotten their Extra after using the HamCram study session and the Extra question pool as study material. These students had studied the Extra Class material before the HamCram and, after multiple tries, finally passed. The HamCram technique probably helped these students, who were experienced Hams capable of answering some questions based on experience/study and others because of the familiarity gained during the HamCram study session.

If you want to upgrade at a HamCram: Make arrangements with the organizer to have the proper question pool, test and VE team available. The General and Extra exams can only be given by a team of three Extra Class volunteer examiners, as opposed to three General or above VE's for the Technician exam. Some teams find it impossible to always have three Extras in attendance, so make sure arrangements are made in advance.
